Sixth Generation

44. John Kilpatrick Jr. was born on 12 May 1820 in Newmilns, Ayrshire, SCT.10 He emigrated on 8 Jul 1842 from Scotland. He was the first child in the family to come to America. His family came up with the passage for him to come and he hired himself out to work for an Englishman near New York City, in Monroe County for five years. After five years, he asked to be released from his contract in order to buy land to facilitate bringing over the rest of his family. The Englishman told him that he had 160 acres of land that John could work for him in Michigan. John went to see the acreage and returned and agreed to work for him for five more years to pay for the land. Then John worked five more years to save up enough money to bring his family over. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Woodland Twp., Barry Co., MI.16 He appeared in the census in 1900 in Woodland Twp., Barry Co., MI.17 He died on 17 Oct 1900 in Woodland Twp., Barry Co., MI.10 He was buried after 17 Oct 1900 in Woodland Twp., Barry Co., MI. He was buried in Woodland Memorial Park Cemetary. The dates in this account are confusing as he supposedly came over in 1842, and worked fifteen years to save money to briung his family over, yet he sent the money in 1847.

He lived at home until 8 Jun 1842, when he set sail for America.

In 1844, he bought a quarter section of wild land in Michigan. He cut the first road and built the necessary bridges to connect his farm with thath of Joseph Shores on section 35. It took him two days to make the two mile trip with oxen.

In the summer of 1847, he sent enough money for his parents and siblings to join him. His father sold what property he had in Scotland and brought his family to Rochester, NY, where John met them and they came together to Michigan. They built a house on his land and lived together about one year, when his father built a house on land he had bought, and where he resided until his death.

In 1854, he built the first recorded mill on section 23 along Mud Creek. It was a hand-hewn, water-powered mill, the head being made by damming up the creek. Joel St. John, who later owned the mill, put in the first circular saw in1877, replacing the upright type that had been in use.

In politics, he was a Republican; started as a free-soiler, and held several town offices. He was of the United Brethren Church, of which he was one of the trustees since its organization in his neighborhood, donating the land on which the church was first built.

He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1867. John Kilpatrick Jr. and Margaret Hager were married on 2 Nov 1859 in Woodland Twp., Barry Co., MI.
