Richard's date of birth is unknown, but he was probably born sometime in the mid-1640's. (source: Donnelly) He died on 9 Nov 1709 in Southold, Long Island, Suffolk Co., NY. Richard's parentage is unknown. Family tradition has long held that he was the son of John and Margaret Howell, but that is far from certain. It is likely that Richard's mother married Peter Hallock after the death of Richard's father. It is also possible that Richard had a sister, also Margaret, who married William Peter Hallock, the sone of Peter Hallock. I have entered the parents names as John and Margaret, but this information must be taken as highly speculative. Anyone wishing a more detailed look at Richard and his descendants should read "Richard Howell of Mattituck in the Town of Southold, Long Island, New York" by Thomas H. Donnelly in the Fall 1999 issue of "The Genealogist." Various authors have given Richard as many as two brothers and as many as two sisters, but all information about his family remains unproven. Richard Howell and (unknown) were married before 1670. 1025. (Unknown)50
died before 1685. Richard Howell's first wife, the mother of his
son, John, born in May 1670, and possibly several of his later children, is
unknown, although it is possible that she was one of the daughters of William
Hallock of Southold. Statements made, without documentation or discussion, that
Richard had married Hallock's daughter, Elizabeth, were probably based on misconceptions
that Richard had only one wife and that this wife was Hallock's daughter "and"
John Harrud's widow. Richard possibly married first a Hallock daughter, but,
if so, there is no reason to suppose that she was the one named Elizabeth. (source:
