John Clarke was born before 8 Oct 1609. He was baptized on 8

Newport, RI. He was long one of the chief persons of the Rhode Island
Colony, was pastor of the First Baptist Church at Newport, was agent of the Colony
in England, 1651-1663, being instrumental in procuring the Colonial charter in
the latter year, and after his return to Newport was deputy governor of Rhode
Island, 1669-1672. While in England, he practiced his profession as a physician
and published two books, " Aconcordance of the Holy Scriptures," and
"Ill News from New England." Tradition says that Dr. Clarke was educated

a deputy 1668-1672 and 1690. He was the only member of the family who left issue
in New England, and from him descends the greater part of the Clarke families
